tejek sees evidence of racism every where he looks. Other people don't. Is tejek more observant or becoming a compulsive racist. I've seen evidence of racism but it has been a rare experience for me.

I have excellent observational skills and I test it sometimes. I like to roll the radio tuner to a station and guess the format by the time the DJ has expressed one syllable. I can almost alway tell by the tone, the projection, and the attitude in the voice what kind of station it is. I'm amazed at how DJs lock into those molds of conduct so precisely. With hearing one syllable I can tell you if its Christian Religious, or Jazz, or classic, Classic rock, Hard Rock, Sports, Conservative talk, Liberal talk, country, Rhythm and blues (although sometimes I miss and get R&B mixed with Jazz but I think the DJs are interchangeable there), of course ethnic doesn't count. If I hear anything but the voice I disqualify the station and go to the next one. Obviously music and/or background stuff is a give away.

Dress is the same way. People dress for success at whatever kind of image they hope to convey.

Cashiers have lots of reasons for engaging some customers and not others. Eye contact vs avoidance, someone who is obviously hurried with impatient expressions vs someone hanging on a bit, someone looking wimpish in need of encouragement, someone looking freaked out vs comfortable and friendly etc etc etc a thousand etc. Just because you were the only white boy on this occasion is meaningless all by itself.

I know a white woman, well I barely know her because she has never spoken to me. We pass on the stairs or in hallways regularly and she usually averts her eyes, never a friendly expression and I can take a hint. Of course I wondered if it was something about me personally, but I've no clue what that would be. Most people in my daily comings and goings are very friendly in passing. So I've people watched her as she passes other white people. I didn't stalk her, it was just easy to notice in passing. It's always the same behavior. I also noticed that anytime a person of any shade of color other than white passes her, she perks right up with a perfectly friendly greeting. She parks in the same place everyday and I happen to pass her car on the way to mine. Guess what? yep, the bumper stickers about tolerance. Tolerance is a good thing of course but I bet she thinks all white people are racist. She is the only one I see regularly these days, well plus you makes two.

Ted, maybe she liked you, or you smiled...
