She no doubt felt sorry for you. Maybe she sensed a brooding troubled person (hyper conscious of the racial status of everyone around him, mentally categorizing them ... "mixed race", "dark skinned") and wanted to cheer you up.

About "standing in line and all the people in front of me were dark skinned", you'd really be tense in Houston.

I think you should make a mental effort to put a smile on your face. Start smiling around people (whatever their racial or other background) and even at home by yourself. Not some big goofy looking weird thing .... just a normal little smile. It will help you. YOU'LL feel better yourself.
