Jon,

They are located in the same building. They have physical contact with each other.

It is a joke that they would avoid contact.

Do you remember the case of Emanuel Friedman of Friedman, Billings, and Ramsey?

He was forced to drop out of the firm because of such a situation.

Of course it goes on all the time.

I always figured they used their clients assets as leverage for their own trading profits. There is a separation but its quite obvious but when you see Broker XYZ come out with a big upgrade and see Market Maker XYZ flooding the ask on L2 what these folks are up to.
