Sonki:

intel has been making motherboards for years. Dell has been one of their biggest customers, since day 1.

Box makers aren't all the same. HP/IBM/CPQ still design their own PCAs (motherboards), while the folks like GTW tend to buy intel solutions.

If I am not mistaken intel is the single-biggest mfger of motherboards, and has been for quite some time. They actually have been running below capacity for a while now as they fear causing too much of a stir if they take over too much of the PCA market (following the likes of Microsoft enquiries by the DOJ).

Intel has a 2 huge SMT facilities in Penang and Kulim (Malaysia), they have a facility there with 2 own golf courses, in total the size of several football fields (and I mean several in the likes of 30 or 40). They are serious business over there. I was told that they are running at about 50% of capacity there (they have something like 20 SMT lines that are able to churn out a good 500000 (at least) PCAs a month).

So what you have discovered really isn't news to me...
