I went to Home Depot last night and it was dead. And I mean D E A D. Yet I hear things are looking pretty good out there. It's strange. I totally agree with you. I live in SF Bay Area and 20% of my family and my wife's family have not made any mortgage payments for the past year. One of our neighbors was kicked out of their home and for the past 4 months the house has been empty and no "For Sale" sign. Same thing is happening to a condo below my parent's place. People moved out and no activity for six months. I went to a high-end grocery store yesterday to pick a couple of items. I never shop there because it was too expensive and the place was dead and the store was half empty. I asked what happened to all the inventory and to find out why all the bins were empty. The clerks were not really sure and they said it is because of hard times and the owner is negotiating with the vendors. That was very shocking. I can also tell you that 15-20% of people that I know around me are out of work for more than a year and some are out of work for more than two years. These people all had good paying jobs. Some are getting unemployment and others are not making mortgage payments. Some maxed out their credit cards and others managed to lower their mortgage payments.
