GS people may be all rotten apples, or they may not be.... but such obvious show trials should not be part of our political process.

Another thing I can't understand is the endless chatter about limiting derivatives. In "real life" I know very few people who are interested in them, and we tend to dislike what we don't understand. Apparently, political circles are not much different. They think that trading derivatives is equivalent to making bets in a casino. People take those positions for many different reasons - chart patterns, skewed sentiment, etc., or maybe they use their expertise to make fundamental judgments.

All this activity provides liquidity, and it is a crucial part of price discovery - which is what Capitalism is all about.

Most politicians - and commentators - do not understand this very well. What they need to do is abandon their religious belief in bailouts - and learn to control their passion for interventions using other people's money. Let market participants settle their business in an orderly fashion -- using and risking their own money.
