Its worthwhile remembering that the GOM is a US major fishery and has been producing oil and gas for over half a century with almost 4000 active production platforms.

This is going to be much, much worse than the Exxon Valdez because of where it is happening.

That might be true.

OTOH I remember hearing the same sort of thing after the Exxon Valdez leak. That the arctic and sub-arctic areas where particularly vulnerable, and the damage will be so much more than in previous spills.
