Then you'd see a massive shift to non-gas cars including electrics, PHEVs, etc. People are going to have to spend money on transportation, we just have to move them away from the kind of transportation that makes this country weaker. I am all for it. However, what you want to do is to avoid any serious economic dislocations as well as make sure alternatives are available. Two summers ago, when gas went to $4, public transport couldn't handle the sudden increase in ridership. Its important to phase this stuff in gradually.......it will give people time to adjust.
