KT, McCain is a scumbag. It's all quite simple. Hispanics make up a massive and growing voting block. They lean democrat, but it's close enough that republicans correctly feel the need to compete for them. Everyone knows that whoever gets the Hispanic vote is likely to have a tremendous political advantage in the decades to come. The democrats see millions of new voters and union members among both the legals and illegals. They are more then willing to do anything it takes to legalize those illegals and also make sure they don't insult the legals. However, they are willing to take it a step further. They are willing to attack any effort at responsible policy regarding illegal immigrants and immigration as racist in order to incite the legals and swing more of them to the democrats. The leaders of democrats are basically evil treasonous scumbags. The republicans are in a similar but slightly different boat. They also want Hispanic vote, but they have competing constituencies. One part is economically conservative. They want to get rid of the large current budget deficit and massive future deficits by slowing the growth of entitlement spending to the rate of GDP (give or take). Entitlements have been growing way faster than GDP for a very long time and that's woefully irresponsible. Also, everyone that's been paying any attention knows that the promises of Social Security, Medicaid, and Medicare are tens of trillions of dollar greater than the expected tax revenue over time in today's dollars (proper accounting). So basically everyone with an IQ higher than a rock knows that this country is FUCKED unless we start cutting back on the promises. To people like this (basically anyone that's actually intelligent and informed), the idea of putting an ever greater load on that system with low skilled illegal immigrants is so retarded, it has to be considered evil. The other constituency is big business, agribusiness etc.... They want the cheap labor and couldn't give a rats ass about the long term health of the country. More scumbags. So if you are a republican, you have to walk a delicate line between fiscal responsibility, big business, and not wanting to insult Hispanics and lose their votes permanently. Guy like McCain are scumbags because they put big business and politics ahead of the good of the country.
