Why didn't they? they didn't have to here. Yes, it is disgusting. and disgusting ARCO was bought out by them so now my folks retirement check says BP on it. I recall when the Alaska pipeline was put in... ARCO did very very extensive work in not only making the line safe, but making it work for the caribou crossings and such. my father worked on that... I was 13 and gracious we went round about it, and he would lay out plans for me and show me what they were doing to insure safety, and take care of the caribou.

It 'can' be done. now, one thing extensive tests might show is that it simply is not possible to insure deep-welling is safe, and accidents can be dealt with. but if that is what the tests show... so be it.

And my previous was rather a rant. thank you for your wonderful post in response.

I recall hearing a $500k blow out valve would have stopped it.
Lobbied against by the oil lobby.

We are going to learn from that one.

Like I said...clean it up and move on. But there will always be danger involved.

That and more will expected now. even if we don't up new drilling off coasts, those places already open are likely to stay so. but the harshest safety measures will be expected, and not popular opinion is turning that way. disasters are occasionally good for something.
