It took my fisherman friend 20 years to get a small settlement for the Valdez spill. He is a herring spotter.

Lawyers, like unions, have their good side and bad. What is one way you stop bad practices? sue. make them pay till they hurt and change.

If the folks there are fisherfolk, unlike say... I dunno... some upper-classy sort who is tweaked their private beach turned black... I think the sums will be, and should be, to make up for money lost, so they can keep their boats, and houses, and live... till it is safe to fish again.

the families of the dead? a sum that will allow a spouse to get by and raise the children and send them to college, and if the spouse does not have a profession, to attend courses to get one.

oh, and BP should pay the states involved an amount that equals taxes lost because of work taxes lost. and pay something to the people who will be losing out because tourists will stay away.

I think there is little quesiton BP was neglegent. It was allowed, yes... but they didn't have to be negligent just because they could be.
