TI-Acer sees 1998 net profit 2.60 bln twd

AFX, Wednesday, November 05, 1997 at 03:03

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - Acer Inc unit TI-Acer Inc said it forecast 1998 net
profit of 2.60 bln twd, compared with a 1997 estimate of 1.87 bln twd in net
loss.
TI-Acer said sales in 1998 are expected to reach 20.65 bln twd, compared
with a 1997 prediction of 12.36 bln twd.
A senior company official said the much higher profit forecast for 1998
was made based on expectations of a rebound in DRAM prices.
The official said the company also expects its competitiveness to be
enhanced after it shifts to 8-inch wafer production from 6-inch.

1Mx16 EDO price collapsed - now that will do the shake out that is needed, namely all those new Taiwanese guys who thought they can just build DRAM fabs with impunity:

Powerchip and Nan Yan are two that readily comes to mind, Charter from this 'announcement' has given up completely on DRAMs etc.

Now if ALSC from last Friday's post is real that they will do mainly SGRAMs and SDRAM next Q, they will survive.

As for Powerchip and Nan Yan, look for some merger/buyout with stocks from another company, UMC or JV1 comes to mind. 'Buy' those fabs on 30c to 50c on the dollar and with stock only, no cash! Need to get that JV1 to go public ASAP.
