Countries like Canada and Norway have much higher taxes on gas and it hasn't hurt their economies...

Canada and Norway are not great examples.....both are pretty much self sufficient when it comes to oil. However, I didn't say never put the tax in place. I am just saying that I don't think now is the time.

and both Canada and Norway have a lot of oil (considering the total amount they consume as a country). The United States has kept the price of gasoline artificially low for way too many years. The Federal and State governments need the extra revenue and new gas taxes would help fund some major green technology infrastructure projects that are long overdue.

There is no question American policy has been screwed up......and not in terms of just keeping gas taxes low but also not pushing up Cafe Standards on cars. We have the Rs to mostly thank for this mess. Nonetheless, the current administration can not turn everything around in 90 days or even a year's time or even in two year's time. Not when you have the economy just starting to recover.

When an alcoholic goes to his or her bottom, recovery takes a long time. Thing of the US as an alcoholic just starting its recovery.
