"The US Coast Guard has announced that it plans to light the spreading oil slick on fire, in the hope that enough of it will burn up to save the $2 billion a year Louisiana seafood industry from disaster."

Why is there a $2 Bil industry? Cuz of diesel powered boats using diesel-electric powered freezers to preserve the catch until they can be taken back and processed at a plant running on fossil fuels, and then shipped around the country with fossil fuel power. There would be no $2B industry if they had to rely on sail power.

How is this field any different than Neptune? offshore-technology.com
Any idea how many deepwater platforms there are currently producing in the Gulf?

according to the MMS, 52 Lease Numbers were active in the GoM at a water depth of greater than 1500 metres (approx 5000 feet) in January 2010. There are usually several wells per lease number and the lease numbers are related to the production block (field location). Each field will cover one or more blocks and will have one or more lease codes.
