Over100K barrels were spilled in 1990 from a Norwegian tanker 57 miles SE of Galveston. What happened to the oil? It mostly got burned up and hardly any reached the beach.

Gulf of Mexico, 57 miles SE of Galveston, Texas 1990-Jun-08
On June 8, 1990 at approximately 2330, while the Italian tank vessel Fraqmura was lightering the Norwegian tank vessel Mega Borg, an explosion occurred in the pump room of the Mega Borg. The two ships were in the Gulf of Mexico, 57 miles southeast of Galveston Texas in international waters, but within the U.S. exclusive economic zone. As a result of the explosion, a fire started in the pump room and spread to the engine room. An estimated 100,000 barrels of Angolan Palanca crude was burned or released into the water from the Mega Borg during the next seven days.

GALVESTON, Tex., June 16

More than 4 million gallons of the light Angolan crude oil aboard the tanker flowed into the water, but Coast Guard officials said most of it burned or evaporated. Nevertheless, 12,000 to 40,000 gallons are estimated to remain in Gulf waters. Federal and state officials expect oil from the ship to reach shore near here as early as Sunday morning. They say it will show up first in the form of small tar balls.
