He means that religions were born in the childhood of the race because in the absence of science primitive man looked to fancy and superstition for answers to all their questions. He did not mean that Hale Bop or Protestantism or the Quakers started back in prehistory. Probably you are better off not reading it. Every paragraph is going to confuse you. As I said, read something like Genesis or Joshua--short and exceedingly simple stuff...
