I didn't turn off the recommendations, moderators are no more capable of that than they can delete posts.

That isn't true. Moderators can turn recommendations on and off. You go to your subject, click on modify subject, and you can change your intro, add or remove or change the ticker, allow or disallow recommendations, and add or change a portfolio url.
