The author seems to forget that wiping out giants would have seriously affected everyone, including college endowment funds, pension funds, charitable institutions, individuals with their retirements invested with the banks... you can't go nuclear and not expect fallout.

By contrast, the government could have taken a hard line, temporarily taking over insolvent banks, including these giants. This would have wiped out shareholders. It also would have meant giving bondholders a haircut,
