I think the first "funnel" is planned to go on what was formerly the top of the fallen riser, which now lies hundreds of feet away from the well. That's where the biggest leak is.

I still like my LNG solution - with this new twist. Instead of bringing oil up from the top of the funnel, we should pump liquid LNG down into it. Freeze the whole ocean floor for a mile around, a mile deep, and the oil with it. Of course you would have to worry about creating a buoyant iceberg at the bottom of the ocean which might want to float to the surface and tear the "scab" off. But you can just rain down chunks of steel to get embedded in the ice matrix to keep the density up.

A little Ice Nine from Mr Vonnegut would no doubt work better, but I don't think it is available for commercial use yet. Either that or the Department of Homeland Security squirreled it away in a warehouse next to the Ark of the Covenant.
