I got to be a passenger today, cuz Hanabal helped me pick up my new fridge. We're almost to my road, when I said "I sure don't remember a tree down right there". He said, "Yeah, it fell yesterday".

Highway 101 north of Willits was blocked by a tree that fell across all four lanes north of the Sherwood Road Tuesday afternoon, the CHP reported. An elderly Clearlake Oaks pair sustained major injuries when they crashed at the scene of the downed tree.

About 2:04 p.m. driver Myrtle Brown, 77, and her passenger Theodore Brown, 78, were southbound on Highway 101, the California Highway Patrol stated.

Brown was facing the mid-day sun and came upon a shaded stretch of the highway where the tree had fell across the road, the CHP stated.

According to the CHP, Brown did not slow for a Sheriff's car that had its lights on in the other lane and struck the tree. Brown's Toyota spun and overturned. Theodore Brown sustained major injuries and was flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Myrtle Brown also sustained major injuries and was taken to Frank Howard Memorial Hospital in Willits, the CHP stated.

Myrtle Brown and Theodore Brown were wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision and alcohol does not appear to have been a factor, the CHP stated.

Another vehicle traveling north had also collided with the downed tree, the CHP stated. At this time a Sheriff's car arrived at the scene and maneuvered to block off north bound traffic.

Passersby helped to remove a portion of the tree that was enough to open all but one lane, the CHP stated.

Responding to the scene was the Laytonville Volunteer Fire Department, Cal Star, Ukiah Ambulance Company, Caltrans,

the Sheriff's Office and members of the community, CHP stated.
