Poll shows serious long-term unemployment difficulties
Date: 5/5/2010
Despite some potential improvements in consumer spending and the unemployment situation, a recent survey serves as a reminder that investors who get overly optimistic do so at their own risk.

In August 2009, researchers at Rutgers University interviewed 1,202 men and women who had been unemployed during the previous year.

In a follow-up study, the researchers found that 67 percent of this population was still unemployed as of March, while 12 percent had left the labor force and 21 percent were employed. Worse, only 13 percent of those who did find a job managed to land a full-time position.

The report added that 29 percent of the workers under age 30 had managed to find new jobs, compared to 12 percent of those above the age of 50.

Consumers suffering from long-term unemployment will be less likely to qualify for credit needed to finance major purchases like automobiles, while ongoing weakness in the job market means that even people who are working may be reluctant to spend very far beyond their means.
