I recommend that everyone who trades regularly read the following thread:

exchange2000.com

It is moderated by an industry "insider". If you are fairly new to daytrading then start reading it from the beginning it is quite an education!

It will give you a great deal of insight and help you understand the limitations of "discount" brokers like Datek and others. Do not take this as a negative remark on Datek, Datek has its place in this market. But, it is important to have a balanced view and make educated decisions. Many can't seem to see beyond the cheap comissions and don't realize the hidden costs.

I definetly see the advantages of using a discount broker for handling infrequent trades of long positions. But for a few dollars more, to have the assurance of being able to work your own trades, taking advantage of whatever system is the most liquid at that moment is essential. Also knowing that your broker will pick up on the second ring when other means aren't working is not only nice, but required.

Enjoy your trading whatever system you use.
