Giant oil funnel reaches bottom, settles in over gusher

That big, boxy funnel has reached the seabed and been placed over the ruptured well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP says.

The 100-ton box may take up to 12 hours to settle in place, a company spokesman told the Associated Press. If it settles properly, crews will concentrate on hooking up a pipe to pump the gushing oil up to a tanker, a task that could take two days. BP says 85% of the oil might be captured.

BP spokesman Bill Salvin cautioned many challenges lie ahead in BP's first-of-its-kind attempt.
