There are about 22 standard plots that cover about 95% of all the movies and plays in the world.

Sometimes people want familiar stories when they are under stress.

Think of them as forms, like the form of a sonnet, haiku or karate kata. People watch Macbeth even though they know how it turns out.

So for "fall in love with a close relative" I find the brother-sister thing much more tasteful than Oedipus Rex.

Now if this story was set in the US, the brother and sister would run away and change their names and get married in another state....

Nice snarky rundown of the top ten movie plots, star crossed lovers (Romeo and Juliette, West Side Story, Eddie Rex) are number 12 or 13.

Some other plots -

Zombie Apocalypse - Night of the Living Dead, Shaun of the Dead

The helpful community - It's A Wonderful Life

The Road Trip Movie/ Buddy movie- Harold and Kumar Visit White Castle, Blues Brothers.

The other 5% have either original plots, or incoherent editing - like "Plan 9 from Space"
