I think you are missing the bigger point.

Generally, people that like a politician's ideas will claim that he is smart. Those that don't will claim he is not smart.

Both political parties have smart people and idiots.
Both have more idiots than smart people, IMO.

Serious discussions are not advanced by throwing out labels for the applause of like minded people.
