IMO he was smart but also imo he was ineffective. He had penchant to micro manage.

But that is the whole point. You have to have some one in a leadership position with no, or limited, liabilities.

They have to be smart, well educated, free of personal hangups (like not being lazy, etc,etc).

If you start off with someone (and willing to overlook their short comings) that is poorly educated, intellectually lazy, and not smart to begin with - you are in for a world of hurt.

Your advocacy and support of someone like Sarah Palin is a trifecta of liabilities. Not very smart and revealing perhaps of some personal shortcomings. That is just my opinion.
