interesting. thanks. first, before other thoughts on it, I had to look up votive, cause to me that has always been #2 in the following definition, though I know of the #1's and burn them regularly, and right now am looking at...

Main Entry: votive candle
Function: noun
Date: 1824
1 : a candle lit in devotion or gratitude
2 : a small squat candle —called also votive

Main Entry: vo·tive
Pronunciation: \'vo-tivFunction: adjective
Etymology: Latin votivus, from votum vow
Date: 1597
1 : consisting of or expressing a vow, wish, or desire <a votive prayer>
2 : offered or performed in fulfillment of a vow or in gratitude or devotion

----------

wow. I've been lighting these since the beginning of the 80's when I came across them in the Mission district of SF, but didn't know what 'votive' meant. i thought a votive candle was one of those lil things that burns up quick and had no idea why it was called 'votive'. bad lack of curiousity. I'ma take a match to my Good Samaritan candle now with a new vigor. ayup.

and, yes, you can get them in all the stores here now.

I've seen the James ad here. talk about disgusting. It will interesting to see what kind of reaction it gets. I suspect not much, except from some diehards.

Here in Cullman we have several stores now that cater to hispanics, signs are in spanish, and they all have means to send money to other places... they also have excellent produce and herbs. and western clothes. cowboy stuff. get past the brown skin and it mostly looks like a buncha cowboys have come to town. and they have great cowboy clothes for sale. I love cowboy clothes, happy as spit when dudded out.

Several months ago we had a rapist loose around town... attacking women in a local park. the discription was that he was hispanic, so I was paying attention to see if that brought out stupid statements from people, but it didn't. the focus was on catching him, not that rape is peculiar to brown people or that it is somehow worse for the white woman if the rapist is brown.

and all the lil towns I go through now have a store geared for hispanics.

I don't think James will get traction from this. it ain't '92 or '94 when people got traction off the ho-mo-sexual scare, since they wouldn't come out and say "we'll protect you white folks from blacks".

and at least the brown people I've come across either speak English well already or are learning it. as do the asians (thank you for some good Chinese food) and folks from India and the folks from the middle east, who we have a few of now. and seriously, their accents ain't any harder to figure out than a fool from deep in the mountains who says "the woods a'far". the woods are what??? they are far away??? oh, the woods are on fire, afire. k, I'll send the firefolk.
