Yup. In Russia SHTF really happened in the early 90-s when
Soviet Union collapsed, via a major devaluation. The currency
was devalued by a factor of 1000 over a period of 3 years.

1998 "event" was really because they stopped the printing
presses to control hyperinflation, which was running out of
control.

Ditto Mexico, the peso was devalued by a factor of about
1000 in early 90-s, followed by stopping the presses, which
led to 1994 currency crisis.
