TO All QDEL:

You may remember a couple of weeks ago I told you my wife was having stomach pains and went to the doctor for a checkup and I insisted she be checked for the h. pylori bactria. Sure enough, she tested positive and the doctor put her on medication to get rid of the bug. My wife finished her treatment about 10 days ago and she has no more stomach problems; she is a happy camper! And I am a happy camper too because she had been complaining for months about her stomach and, quite frankly, I was concerned.

BTW, next week I will have a physical and you can be sure I will ask for an h. pylori test.

(As a footnote, I talked with my wife's doctor and she said she recently read an article in a medical journal which suggests that once you have had h. pylori you won't catch it again because the body will recognize it and fight it off. Apparently there needs to be more study about that.)

Mike: Great post. Thanks

You wrote, <<Isn't it amazing how the patient sometimes knows more than the doctor?>> Sometimes?????

Once people start to take charge of their own health and the FDA makes all drugs over-the -counter we will see another revolution in health care. Do we really need a high priced professional to tell us what the drug companies told them? Pharmacists do a great job of giving out info. Traditional medicine is great for repairing things like hair lips, cleft pallets, and putting someone back together after an accident. If you're at all familiar with the mind/body connection you'll see where certain people have been cured of "incurable" diseases without any drugs or operations.

Could it be that appendicitus may be caused simply by a microbe? Is anyone trying to get at the root of this problem?? Could it be in the future that Appendicitus may easily be detected by a similiar test years in advance of the acute situation?

Please understand, I'm not off the wall on this mind/body connection. Doctors call it the placebo effect but then ignore it cause there's no money to be made from people being encouraged to heal themselves. Believe me.......I WAS THERE, CHARLIE!

You said "-- they stop by and ask a pharmacistif he carries Helidac."
This week-end, I did so. He said "I bought one jar with 100 pills in
it, I have sold 30, still got 70. There are some generic combinations
I sell instead, Helidac is too expensive to keep on the shelves."
IMO I do not think it is important how much Helidac is being sold.
For QDEL I think it is more important that the P&G salesperson is
PROMOTING the kit. The practioner is obviously going to make his or her own choice regarding method of testing and prescriptions written.
And with the choice of drug, many times the pharmacist will rightly
or wrongly change the script to a generic.
IMO I think the success of the h-pylori kit is going to be premised
on the kind of win QDEL had in the last quarter, $1mil contract for
strep tests. Judging by my perceived attitudes of independant GPs, a QDEL salesman would be wasting his time talking to an independant practioner. Five of my friends have recently been tested for h-pylori,
three of them mentioned to their doctor the availability of a quick
test, neither doctor showed much interest. You can lead the DONKEYTER
to the test, but you can't make him use it.

Considering where Andre De Bruin comes from, do you think that there is anything in todays MEDD news announcement that might in the near
future affect QDEL? QDEL could afford Biotrak. I am just speculating.
