Soros is known for making statements against his positions. I
don't know why he does that. He did call gold the ultimate
bubble, causing a brief drop, while GLD is the largest
position of his fund.

Back in 1998 he claimed Russia was a "good investment",
while his fund was shorting the Hell out of Asian currencies
and the ruble.

FWIW, I totally agree. That's what I thought Soros was saying all along. It amazed me to read what I thought were out-of-context comments on his quote. If you heard his interview w/ bass-lips and listened closely, it was pretty obvious what he meant. I caught that minyan article at the time which I thought cleared it all up but apparently many missed it.
