the rights of citizens. ah, indeed, those rights. the arc of justice really is long. and anyone who says the 50's are ancient speaks as someone unaffected by the bad things... losing rights? we gain them by the day. In the 50's in NYC, that grand liberal blue city, it was not only against the law to be queer, they had laws on what clothes you could wear. a woman had to be wearing at least 3 pieces of what was considered 'female' clothing. and imagine what it takes to find that out? in other words, if you had on male jeans, boxers, and dude shoes... you could go to jail. I guess as someone who has slowly been gaining 'basic rights' (like not going to jail for wearing boxers), while I am concerned about current events, I am somewhat perplexed by the sudden worries of certains over the issue. the issue has been there all along. I think you are wrong about kagan. and about O, as well. but time will tell, indeed. I'm just happy to have lived through the years when laws like in NYC fell, and when sodomy laws have fallen, when at least some places a gay couple can adopt, when they can sit with their love while s/he is ill or dying. when police don't do sweeps in gay clubs and beat the patrons. when blacks can ride the bus in any seat. all kinds of fine things going on. and I don't intend to see it all go backwards. I doubt Kagan does, either.
