My sense of things is that when a "calamity eventually does strike", it would be denominated in prices which would be declining against major currencies. This would suggest that cash is a desirable position. However, I noticed that gold held up quite well throughout the volatility of the last several days. If gold breaks out to new all time highs, I think that would be a good reason to worry about the ability of major currencies to preserve their value.
