so if the trades are machine driven (my assumption) high frequency... does it not follow that they need also be high speed..

In response to your question, if you're considering "high frequency" to be in & out of a trade in a matter of a few seconds or less, then YES; but if you consider "high frequency" to be in & out of a trade in a few minutes, then NO.
