I don't think it is a 'Novell pays cash' type of deal. I think it's a Novell violated IBM patents in Wordperfect and now IBM gets free access to the Novell intellectual property vaults while letting Novel have some access to IBM's patent suite. But if Novell thought they have/had any special, patentable software in any of their products, IBM may now be able to look them over and adopt them into IBM products under the cross-license deal.
