Compaq Says Could Double India Investment in 5 yrs
By Sanjit Singh

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - U.S.-based Compaq Computer said today it could double its investment in India by 2002.

"It is reasonable to say that we could double our investment in India in five years, if we achieve over 30 percent growth," said Paul Chan, Compaq's vice-president and managing director for the Asia Pacific.

Chan was speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of a news conference to announce the establishment of Compaq's fully- owned subsidiary in India, Compaq Computer (India) Pvt Ltd.

Compaq started operations in India in March 1994 thorough a branch office, he said.

"Until now we have cumulatively invested close to $20 million in people, infrastructure, buildings and networks," he said.

Chan agreed with the International Data Corp's forecast that India's information technology (IT) sector would grow by 28 percent a year over the next five years, second only to China in the region.

My understanding was that 3-4 years ago Intel 'grabbed' the motherboard business to drive higher function-higher price cpu's into the market faster. In doing so GTW and Dell became the marketing arms for INTC. Now MUEI has joined. The Taiwanese govt struck back against the INTC motherboard monopoly, and intel soft pedalled. Meanwhile with Slot 1 etc, intel is doing the same thing with a smaller part. But with low cost clone cpus that are 'good enough', and UMA and graphics and glue on the cpu from Cyrix, today is more interesting.

I always considered dell and gtw to be intel serf's - is this not true? Cpq seems much more independent. a solutions co as steve might say.

Steve,

Thanks for info. I would have never thought Dell to be cheaper than GTW.

Like I said, I never see Dell boxes at my cutomers. My customers range in size from 10 people to 500 employees.

I have to ask you why you dropped target to 80 from 100 for CPQin January? I'll check thread now to see if somebody else asked question.
