That is the problem, isn't it? The Right has controlled the narrative for decades. As a result, we have the Tea Partiers being described as Populists, and they have a core belief that we need to repeal the 17th amendment. Which is so far from a true Populist goal that it defies belief. A true Populist would never try to dilute the power of direct election. Only someone who is in control of the existing power structures could advocate such an idea. Which is where the Tea Party is at.
