Mq,

It's on the record that Alan Greenspan is a committed, systematic, methodical inflationist. His publicly stated policy was to pursue "anchored expectations" of inflation amounting to around 2% annually. Your rapturous support of Uncle Al and his intentional currency debasement, combined with your disdain for precious metals, seems rather at odds with the stuff I see on your NZ Libertarian Party web site...

Inflation of the money and credit supply destroys the value of savings,” he added. “And yet we hear politicians agonising about New Zealand’s supposedly poor savings rate and overinvestment in real estate. Why not shut down the Reserve Bank and allow private banks to print their own currency, backed by real assets such as gold? This will help protect bank deposits from debasement by politicians.”

Furthermore, the US Libertarian Party includes this plank in its platform...

2.5 Money and Financial Markets

We favor free-market banking, with unrestricted competition among banks and depository institutions of all types. Individuals engaged in voluntary exchange should be free to use as money any mutually agreeable commodity or item. We support a halt to inflationary monetary policies, the repeal of legal tender laws and compulsory governmental units of account.

Mq, you know darn well that I'm not a gold bug. I don't have faith in gold-based currency as a panacea against inflation, because the government can simply devalue the currency against gold. I'd prefer a political/cultural system that believes in holding the fiat currency closer to zero inflation because it's the honest thing to do. Inflation is a hidden tax, and I'd rather have the taxes out in the open so people know what's going on.

I believe that if Alan Greenspan was a true Libertarian, he would have pursued a policy of zero inflation for the USD. Instead he cozied up to the "free lunch" Republicans and "pie in the sky" Democrats who love steady inflation.

Your acquiescence to inflation is just one reason why I question your claim to be a Libertarian. There are others.
