I'm not sure exactly why you keep up with this "lifted the ban" BS, but just to clarify once again:

Obama lifted a ban on new offshore leases in areas outside of the gulf. This was done quite recently, a few months ago, and to the best of my knowledge there have been no new leases granted as a result of the "lifted" ban.

The lease that BP was operating under in the Macondo Prospect seems to have been granted in 2008.

Bright Spot - Jun 2008 to Oct 2009
BP Exploration & Production acquired MC 252 at the 3/19/2008 Central GOM Lease Sale #206 with a bid of 34003428.00; Lease expiration 5/31/2018.

It would have been nice if Obama had immediately gotten on top of the apparent cesspool at MMS and gotten serious about oversight of offshore drilling. He had other things to do, and I'm sure a cleanup will come with time now. I can't imagine that the "Drill Baby Drill" / Fox News / teabagger crowd would have been the least little bit supportive of any action on that front before the current fiasco. "Drilling Death Panels" or some similarly bs-ful neologists is my guess at the most likely reaction from the, er, loyal opposition.

"Who lifted the ban and who said the "rigs are safe"? About a month later we have a blow out."

What's funny is that your ilk lay the blame at Obama's feet, when YOU voted for a self described "oil man" TWICE, who packed the MMS and the other regulators with "oil men".

All Obama is guilty of is really bad luck and timing. You're guilty of repeated bad judgement.

Fortunately for us all, this blowout happened and revealed that these rigs a mile down not only aren't safe, but the companies doing this have NO CLUE how to fix them when something goes wrong. I'll predict that deep water drilling like this will be shut down, and the rigs currently IN production will be capped at all depths where divers can't go.
