"but then again, no one really objected."

I suppose it depends on your definition of "objected". Did anyone try to assassinate him? Not that I know of. Did a lot of people complain about the process? Yes.

"Moreover, Hitler himself had widespread popularity among those he riled up, especially the impressionable youth."

Not just them. Hitler was the outsider, wasn't tainted by the business as usual in Berlin. Some of his supporters voted for him because they thought he would shake things up.

They were right.

"German society eventually determined that exterminating Jews was the "moral" thing to do."

Not the case at all. Most Germans were horrified when the details about the camps were made public. If they thought it was such a moral thing to do, why was it kept a secret? You, a little box in the corner of a newspaper, so many Jews "neutralized" this week, month, year...

Now, most Germans had no problem with the Jews, Gypsies et al being rounded up. But extermination was not a popular option.

"Like you said, German society "drifted into it,""

I didn't say that. The drifting was all in the leadership. They didn't start out with the idea of killing them. Granted, they weren't all that scrupulous about taking care of their health and safety, but the didn't have a program of extermination in mind.
