Another TSMC exec joins UMC
By Mark LaPedus

HSINCHU, Taiwan-- Another high-level executive from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. (TSMC) has resigned from the IC wafer foundry company here to join archrival United Microectronics Corp. (UMC).

Gary Tseng, senior vice president and chief financial officer for TSMC, has resigned to take a similar post with UMC. Both silicon foundries are based in Hsinchu.

Tseng's departure follows another high-level executive who jumped ship and then joined UMC. During the past summer, former TSMC president Donald Brooks came out of his short-lived retirement to become president of UMC's newly-formed international operations, based in Sunnyvale, Calif. Brooks is also a UMC board member.

UMC has also recruited an executive from another foundry competitor in recent months. Chris Chi, senior vice president of Singapore's Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Pte. Ltd., recently resigned from that company to take a similar post at UMC
