The World Leader in Next-Generation Telephone Systems
During the quarter, the versatility of NextLevel's NLevel3 Switched
Digital Access (SDA) System was further proven with U S WEST's
contract to purchase a minimum of 450,000 xDSL lines and Residential
Gateways. This contract represents the world's first cost-effective,
broad-scale commercial deployment of VDSL technologies. The NLevel3
VDSL architecture is capable of delivering video and Internet/data
services over copper twisted-pair cables at speeds of 26 Mbps to the
home and 3 Mbps from the home. U S WEST joins Bell Atlantic in
selecting the NLevel3 SDA system. Bell Atlantic's contract calls for
the deployment of 1 million lines to deliver voice telephony over
fiber-to-the-curb networks in the greater Boston and New York City
areas. The contract has provisions for up to 5 million lines. The
NLevel3 SDA System is the world's first integrated system offering a
rich array of voice, high-speed Internet/data and video services over
fiber optic, coaxial cable and copper twisted-pair cables utilizing
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), fiber-to-the curb (FTTC), digital
loop carrier (DLC) and digital subscriber line (xDSL) technologies.
Using NextLevel's Residential Gateway, telephone service providers can
now cost effectively deliver switched digital video and Internet/data
services to television sets and personal computers throughout the
home.
