The "way out of control" concern was that there was a huge amount of oil leaking and it wasn't getting to the surface.

i.e. there was a hidden problem, much bigger then 5k barrels per day.

I have watched the BP technical news. The guy in charge of the containment and fix has been careful not to put any figures out, very careful, that could later be seen as inaccurate. I didn't see the first technical interviews though.

The 2k barrels per day recovery suggests to me that the amount leaking was about 5k per day, NOT the much higher figure banded about in some places.

My guesstimate is thay have started to get a handle on the problem, and with a bit of luck they will have the well capped in a week or two. If the oil is getting to the surface, it's been cleaned up fairly effectively so far.

I don't know any of these matters for sure, just a matter of keeping an eye on the news.

Louisiana shore sees heavy oil as BP prepares plug

The discovery of heavy oil in marshlands at the southern tip of Louisiana's peninsula showed that authorities lacked the capacity to track undersea oil effectively, marine conservation biologist Rick Steiner said.
