AMD and Cyrix started a price war, and now everybody (including Intel) is being hurt BAD. Cyrix's relative position possibly looks best, the Media GX was, in retrospect, a good product at EXACTLY the right time. But niether Intel's survival nor even its dominance is at stake. AMD, on the other hand, has some SERIOUS debt coming up to pay for the retooling of the Austin fab and the fab under construction in Germany. The fat lady has not sung, but she's practicing. AMD has a limited window of opportunity, probably through the first part of next year, and if they can't get things really turned around by then, not for a quarter or two but on an ongoing basis, it's going to be deep doo-doo when most of the world is "slot" oriented and Merced begins shipping, both probably by 1999.
