The human species has only just entered a period of pervasive civilzation e.g. democracy/republics, no slavery, racism, or sexism allowed. The new prolem is the human species needing to think larger than a tribe to encmpass comapssion for people they never met. The problem really has to do with how a society wants to function. IMO, we did best when we had strong unions as a counter balance to strong corporations. Our country did best when we had a strong middle class protected by 35% unions. 50,60's. Since the 80's unions have been systematically reduced to 7%. This is just a simple matter of balancing power in a society to ensure humanity and equality. A society without humanity is sure not worth much. As an equation, and IMO, corporations are sociopathic by nature. Profit is their only motive. So a democracy has to provide the conscience ergo unregulated capitalism was always nonsense. We have sophisticated social theory and should be applying it.
