There is no dispute however about the fact that Ireland's severe cutback in spending (and rise in taxation... both done to help narrow their national deficits over the long-run) have increased the severity of their down turn (and the size of their deficit) over the SHORT-RUN.

The short-run, (quarter-to quarter), numbers are already in of course....

While we will SEE what the long-run results are.

(I see no contradiction whatsoever, and I fully believe, that the actions they have taken will *both* worsen the severity of the Irish economic slump over the near-turn... while also strengthening the prospects for real growth over the long-run.)

There simply are no 'free lunches'.
