According to "Flags of Our Fathers" Iwo Jima was necessary as the B-29s had to fly too close to it returning from bombing Japan, and were at a disadvantage to Japanese fighters.

Peleliu, one of the bloodiest and despicable battles of the Pacific, was unnecessary.

I know somebody who was in that invasion and two others. He doesn't talk about it.

We needed the Mariannis for the B-29's and drop tanks on our 51's for fighter protection.

I spent a few days in Saipan in 1982 on the way to Palau. We left Guam overflying Tinian which is a hop, skip and jump from Saipan. You could easily make out the runways that the B29s used at Tinian which actually had two fields. Both looked similar from the air except that the North Field was larger and where our military staged air power for the invasion of Japan.

For those on the thread who might not be aware, to this day, the Japanese travel to Saipan on a regular basis to pray for their relatives who were killed and the thousands who committed suicide by leaping from the cliffs.

There still are remnants of tanks and other hardware in the water near beaches. Saipan is internationally known for its scuba diving.
