Obviously the border trade realities and common currency have practical benefit,

How so? A currency conversion is always in instantaneous parity, and instantaneous is when you have to make an economic decision. That is, currency considerations are a push. Always. I recognize that this goes against what is believed universally, but it is a trivial economic truth.

As for border trade there's no advantage in it. Europe's big trading partner is Asia just as it is in the US. Euro zone countries don't even like to trade with each other. Don't trust the quality of product. You know the sentiment here.

and yet the consequences of the burden for others largesse being imposed is problematic, dont you think?

More like, practical or convenient.

When Germany reintegrated how much did the EU partners contribute to the expenses of the reunification?

0.

I recall all manner of moral support, but dont remember any grand financial support.

Quite.

The article provided raised many red flags, such as complaints about Germany not importing enough from other EU member states. There must be good reason for the lack of demand?

Do you want to buy a Russian car? Why should Germans buy expensive junk from socialists?

Germany appears like our Texas.

I guess, in some sense.

same ability to stand on its own,

TX is devolving into CA as its people in big cities see the advantages of socialism.

and that ability is enhanced by EU membership,

All EU members resent all others. Total house of mistrust. The only reason the union survives is because of socialism. Socialism forces them to lean on each other, to try to steal from each other. That's what socialism's poverty does to humans. It induces the worst unprincipled behavior.

but there must be a better way than forfeit its identity to neighborly largesse.

As long as they persist with the socialism delusion the EU will hobble along in misery. If Germany broke away, and asserted, "Deutschland uber alles", by becoming viciously capitalistic, and thereby explode to the economic top of the world's nations, the EU would collapse like a house of cards. That would clean up all the problems in southern Europe. For example, in Greece, you'd get a crackdown. Troops would shoot down protesters just like the Russians cleaned up Somali pirates by capturing a bunch and summarily executing them.
