Actually its very likely your ancestors did own slaves at some point. Slavery goes way back. Its not just a black slaves with white American owners thing. Its also very likely, perhaps even almost certain, that you had ancestors that where slaves. You're probably right. My family was fairly affluent when they were in Europe. They definitely had servants and they owned tobacco plants in Turkey. It would not surprise me if there were slaves in those tobacco plants. Not that this should cause you to feel guilty. Each person is only responsible for his own conduct, not those of his distant ancestors or even his parents. I have never felt any guilt on this subject. However, I do recognize the damage that long term slavery and discrimination has done to blacks in this country.
