Hey Duncan,

AOL was " Cisco Powered " when they crashed last year for something like 17 hours right? What about NetCom?

oops, I'm starting to sound like Bob Levine, sorry.

Duncan - thanks for your thoughts. Clearly, COMS ain't gonna compete with Cisco on an even playing field. Question is...is the field large enough for Coms to be a player?

Again...your thoughts appreciated.

Peter

To be fair, the 56K technology is good. It may not reach the maximum speed at 53k but it can do 38 to 43k easily if your phone line is close to the central office (most are). As we see more and more digital PSTN, line condition will only improve for data connection which once were desgined strictly for voice connection. What's even better is that 56k modem cost slightly more than existing 33.6k modem, why don't buy the one with better potential. Will you buy a Escort if you can get a Mustang for $500 more? For instance, I myself is using a Zoom 56k modem based on Rockwell technology, my ISP doesn't support K56 until next year but I tried K56 connection with my friend's account with consistent downlink speed averge around 40k but never exceed 43k when downloading large zip file. You know you can't trust the initial connection speed reported by Win95 since x2/K56 usually connect begins 33.6 then contantly attempt to speed up to 53K and fall back if needed. So actual connection speed may varies over time. Also I found the modem works better at high speed after firmware 7-23-97 update.

A note to the CNet "10 Tech that don't stand a chance" article. To me this article is more like entertainment than a technical report. It's views on PDA, 56K, Java and some extent the PUSH are not valid and incomplete. So don't take it seriously.

Good Luck
