Freethinkers don't have ultimate knowledge. But they use thought to evaluate the world as it is in their place and time. The first freethinker thought the sun was a god or at least something very strong. He was at least partly right. He was the person who showed the tribe how to hunt and what to eat. A freethinker deals in reason and facts. Today, if someone says Hale Bop is a spaceship and the sun is a God, she is NOT a freethinker--or she is a damaged one...
